"When they called my name after a touching and beautiful introduction,

I rose from my front row seat and headed for the stage, as I had done

thousands of times in my more than four decades on the road.

My sister Eliza was sitting to my right and my manager / partner Maxine

to my left. My brother Henry, my oldest son Daryl, four of my daughters,

my niece Helen, my entire touring group, and many other supporters and

friends were in the audience.

As I walked up the steps onto the stage, I could feel myself getting very,

very full. When I did reach the podium, all I could do was hold on to it.

I was completely overcome and I burst into tears. I was aware that the

press camera lights began to flash everywhere, but I just cried. The color

pictures were on the front page of the newspapers the next day...

This emotional time sent me into a mode of reflection. I looked back.
